How Pinterest can Drive Massive Traffic to Your Blog!
So you’ve created your shiny new Blog, made it look all pretty with your gorgeous images and neat little widgets that you’ve tucked in everywhere, you’ve even written a few posts and even created an Opt-in form to place in your sidebar.
But……something is missing!
That’s right! You NEED traffic! But where do you get it from? It’s not like a line from a popular movie “If you build it, they will come!”….Blogging doesn’t work that way (we wish it did though!). No, you’re gonna have to work for it, but lucky for you, there are plenty of resources and other Bloggers around to tell you how to do that. At the end of this post I list a few courses that can help any new Blogger just getting started, but first I’m going to talk about one sure fire way to get you the traffic that you need so more people are reading your Blog and filling out that lonely Opt-in form!
What is that traffic source you ask?
I’ll tell you in just one simple word……PINTEREST!
Pinterest is every Bloggers dream come true when it comes to building traffic. You just have to find and figure out the perfect strategy that works for you and your Blog! But more on that in another post, right now we’re talking traffic. So let’s check out how you can get droves of FREE traffic from Pinterest.
First, you need a Pinterest Account
But not just a regular account, a Business account! If you’ve been on Pinterest and have a Personal account, then all you need to do is convert to a Business account, it’s free! Or, if you don’t want to use your Personal account for conversion, then make a separate account, only this one is for your Business….your BLOG!
Once you convert or set up a new Business account, you’ll notice that you have access to all kinds of cool things, like Rich Pins, and Analytics. Analytics are a great feature to have and works almost like Google Analytics with the data it provides. You’ll be able to see how many people you’re reaching with your Pins, how well your Pins are performing, you can even find out the age groups of your audience, where they are, what devices they use, even what they are searching for! Pretty cool huh?
Now that you have your Business account, where do we go next?
Tweak your Pinterest Profile!
By “tweak”, I mean OPTIMIZE! Make your Pinterest Profile POP! You want something unique, something that stands out, something that will compel Pinteresters to visit your boards, and your Blog! The best way to do this is with KEYWORDS! And lots of them! Use keywords that are relevant to your Niche, in your Business name, and About You sections. Include your website name and keywords relevant to your website. Use keywords and search terms that you think people might be looking for that are also what you Blog about. Your use of Keywords is what helps people find you on Pinterest! TIP – Not sure about what keywords you should use? Go to one (or a few) of the bigger well-known Bloggers’ Pinterest Profile that are in your Niche, and see what keywords they used! If it works for them, then it’ll will most likely work for you! (wink)
Pinterest favors Profiles, Boards, and Pins that are Keyword Rich!
Chances are that you will change or re-word your profile a few times at some point (I know I did!).
Okay, now you have the most AWESOME Pinterest Profile ever, full of rich keywords just aching for people to find you…..what else can we do to ensure that you get good traffic coming your way?
We also Tweak your Pinterest Boards!
But wait….do you have any boards yet? If you do, then Yay You! If not, then make some ASAP! Make at least ten boards that are Titled with keywords. You can’t just call them any old thing or pick funny titles, this is YOUR business! Say you’re in the Food niche, title your boards after the different foods you write about, like Italian Cuisine, Casseroles, Desserts, you get the idea! These are all keywords! Try to use general words and terms and not words that are slang or that no one would think to search for.
After you have created some boards, now you’re going to add pins to them. Pin quality pins to your boards, with beautiful images, and with no broken links! You can check them simply by clicking on them. If it leads to something other than what the Pin states, discard that pin immediately! You don’t want any spammy pins on your boards because this can actually compromise the trust your audience builds with you (and that really SUCKS!). So get rid of those pins as fast as you can! You want no less than 10-20 pins on each board to start off with.
Now the fun part! Your board descriptions! Just like your profile description, you want to use lots of keywords, keywords that are relevant to your niche and website content. Along with pinning other pinners pins, you are going to be pinning your own hand made pins to these boards also! It also helps Pinterest figure out what your boards are about, plus the keywords you use help pinners find your pins in their search.

Later, when you have more practice and have become a wizard at making eye-catching pins, you can create pretty Board Covers for your boards! Speaking of making Pins…….
Create Pins that are Beautiful and Engaging!
A lot of people have the misconception that Pinterest is a Social Media Platform…..It’s NOT! Pinterest is a Visual Search Engine! Just like Google but with pretty pretty pictures instead of boring text. So the Pins you make need to be gorgeous yet engaging. Meaning you want the package to look fantastic, yet it also gets the point across! The first thing you need is a place to make these pretty pins. I use PicMonkey, I love it! It’s easier to use than some of the other image editing platforms, and it’s free! You can upgrade to the paid version for more features and tools (which I recommend), but the free version is just fine when starting out. Want to see what PicMonkey is all about? Sign up for your free trial!
You want to choose high-quality images for your pins, but be careful about getting your images off of the internet, you don’t want to infringe on someones copyright! (Boo) There are sites that have free stock photos that are free for commercial and non-commercial use. I recommend Pixabay, Pexels, and Unsplash. All have gorgeous images like the ones you see other Bloggers using in their pins. You can also take your own pictures! PicMonkey has free tutorials to teach you how to do cool things with your images and creations. Pins are very easy to make, just play with it and find YOUR own unique design and stick with it….make it YOURS!
We have a great Profile, our Boards are poppin’, and we are creating top-notch gorgeous pins……now what?
Start Joining Group Boards
There are literally a CRAP ton of Group Boards on Pinterest! Your challenge is to find the boards in your Niche and apply to join as a collaborator. Group Boards can do awesome things for your traffic by getting your pins in front of new audiences! When you pin to a group board, all the followers of that board will see it in their feed, one follower shares it, then another, then another, and so on. Collaborators can pin them to their own boards as well. The reach from pinning to a group board can be ENORMOUS depending on how many followers the group board has. You always want to try to join group boards that have a large number of followers because that is their initial REACH!
So how do you find and join these Group Boards?
One method is to go to the Pinterest Search Bar, type in “Group Boards”, then go to the drop-down menu to the right of the search bar and click “boards” (the image below will show you what I mean!). You should have displayed in front of you that crap ton of group boards I was talking about earlier!
Another method is to follow some Group Boards, re-pin their pins, like and comment on them, and hope that you might be invited to join.
You can go to the profile description of the Group Board and see if they give you a way to join their boards, like send a message or email the board owner. Most will tell you what to do if you want to join. Don’t get discouraged if you get denied, there are plenty of Group Boards for you to apply to!
You can always start your own Group Board and recruit collaborators!
And last, but certainly not least…….
Tailwind Tribes are kind of like Group Boards, except we re-pin each other’s pins to our own boards. Each Tribe member that re-pins your pin gets it in front of their audience (reach), and that gives your pin even more potential to be shared by their followers, and their follower’s followers, and so on…..the Reach can be limitless! Tailwind Tribes is probably the best “secret weapon” to every Blogger when it comes to Pinterest and gaining traffic!
If you haven’t tried Tailwind yet, then you’re missing out on a great traffic driving potential! Tailwind is free to try and only cost 14 bucks a month (pretty cheap if you ask me!) I highly recommend it and encourage it! You can check it out here!
Well, there you go! A few ways to drive some massive traffic to your Blog! Everyone has their own Pinterest strategy in the Blogging world, you just need to figure out what yours is. Pinterest is a powerhouse when it comes to promoting your content and building your traffic, and if done correctly, your traffic can EXPLODE!
Like I promised, here are some Courses that I highly recommend for new Bloggers just starting out with Pinterest, in no particular order of course!

Pinterest Traffic Avalanche by Alex and Lauren @CreateandGo
Making Pinterest Possible by Ana @TheSheApproach (ebook)
The low down is…..if you are active on Pinterest with your own Pins and Pinning other Pinners’ Pins (damn! Say that fast five times!!), are CONSISTENT, are always learning and paying attention to the way Pinterest works and changes (the algorithm is constantly changing!), writing quality content and providing value to your readers, AND making drop-dead gorgeous keyword rich Pins…..you WILL reap the rewards of your efforts!
I’ve been on Pinterest since it first launched in January 2010! But, I’ve only been studying its inner workings for the past couple of years. My own “strategy” has changed a few times since last November! That’s how fast Pinterest can change up on you! But not to fret, you just need to update your own strategy once you find what that is. I went from 10,000 viewers to 170,000 in less than 2 weeks on Pinterest, using the exact same tactics that I just explained in this post, and…..my Blog traffic TRIPLED! You can do this!
